Clos de Sarpe, Saint Emilion, 2001
This may be the biggest, richest, most intensely concentrated wine of the entire vintage in Saint-Emilion (much like it was in 2000).
Sadly, there are only 900 cases of this unfined and unfiltered masterpiece.
Made up of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon made from yields of 23 hectolitres per hectare (most of which comes from 60-80-year old vines) this epic wine was made in a huge, nectar-of-the-vine-like style and it is incredibly pure and rich, but also very uncompromising.
Enormously concentrated, massive on the palate, with incredibly high levels of tannin it also possesses high levels of extract and is meant for patient connoisseurs.
It will have a fascinating evolution, lasting 30-40 years, but being conservative, its best window for drinking will between 2010 and 2025.
Outstanding!
